Want To Lose Weight? Be Happy

“I’m going to get 6-pack abs by Memorial Day,  and then I’ll be able to take my shirt off at the pool, flaunt my body and have the girls looking at me.”

This used to be the goal I set for myself year after year, when I was in my 20s – young and naive.  I thought that getting the body of my dreams was going to make me happy.

But was getting a 6-pack and being confident enough to take my shirt off, hoping to get compliments really going to make me a happy person at my core?  Sure it may feel good to get looks and comments – temporarily.  It may give me a boost of confidence – temporarily.

But if I was an unhappy person, how would getting my dream body suddenly make me a happy person?  It won’t.

Usually if you don’t have enough happy in your life, there are other deeper issues going on – you don’t like your job, you’re in a bad relationship, you have too much stress or overwhelm in your life, you’re not grateful for what you have, you hang around with negative people, or any number of other things.

Losing weight or getting 6-pack abs won’t help solve these.

Many people say “when I lose 20 pounds, I’ll be happy.”  You’ve probably said it.  I certainly have said it, except I said, “when I get 6-pack abs, I’ll be happy.”

And I know it’s sometimes hard to refrain from saying things like that, right?   It indicates that when you hit a certain number on the scale or look a certain way, that you’ll be happy.

But this is rarely the case.  Are you really a happier person when you weigh a certain amount?

Diet and exercise are the basis behind losing body fat, but experts are now saying that optimism and happiness are just as important when it comes to losing weight.

And research is showing that if you’re a happy person, and have a positive outlook on life, then you’ll have an easier time losing weight.

Translation – you’ll actually have a better chance at losing weight if you can achieve happiness first.

So what are some quick ways to become happier?

Smile more

Meditate or practice relaxing for 5 minutes

Write a thank you card

Pet a dog (see how happy I am) 🙂

Get outside in nature and go for a short walk or run (this is when I was at the beach in LaJolla)

Try these on a regular basis and watch how your mood quickly changes

Other things you can try that will make you happy:

Volunteer – (one of the happiest times in my life was volunteering in Guatemala)

Go on an adventure (love our fitness adventures in Colorado)

Perform a random act of kindness

Cookout with friends and don’t use any technology (camping out with friends is a great way to relieve stress and connect with yourself)

Once you start implementing these in your life, your overall outlook on life, and level of happiness will increase.  You’ll feel great and will actually want to exercise more, and make healthier food choices.

And the side effect of being happier?  The weight will start to melt off. 🙂

    I especially feel happy when I randomly compliment people on the street. I tell them I love their shoes or their hairstyle. People are shocked when we are nice in today’s world. It makes me happy to see their shock!
